Ingredients
  

Apple Filling
  • 6 large Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and sliced thin)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Topping
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 2 tablespoons of flour until evenly coated. Spread the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, combine 3/4 cup flour, oats, both sugars, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter and mix until crumbly.
Baking
  1. Sprinkle the topping over the apple mixture evenly.
  2. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Serving
  1. Let the crisp rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.
  2. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

For added flavor complexity, mix different varieties of apples. Can be made gluten-free by using a gluten-free flour blend. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
