Ingredients

For the custard
  • 2 cups milk Whole milk recommended for creaminess.
  • 1/2 cup sugar Can substitute with honey or a sugar alternative.
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch Used for thickening the custard.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Enhances the flavor.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract For rich vanilla flavor.
  • 4 large egg yolks Whisk vigorously to prevent cooking.
  • 2 tablespoons butter Adds richness to the custard.
For the crust
  • 1 pre-baked crust pie crust or shortbread crust Ensure pre-baked to avoid sogginess.

Method

Preparation of Custard
  1. In a saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble.
  2. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Gradually add a small amount of the hot milk mixture to temper the yolks.
  3. Return the tempered yolk mixture to the saucepan. Add the vanilla extract and butter, stirring until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard into the prepared crust, spreading it evenly.
  5. Chill in the refrigerator until set, about 3 to 4 hours.
Serving
  1. Once set, cut into squares and serve. Optionally garnish with fresh fruit, whipped cream, or cocoa powder.

Notes

For enhanced flavor, consider infusing milk with vanilla pods or citrus zest. Store in an airtight container for freshness up to 3 days.
