Method
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 4-5 minutes).
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with milk, and mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
Baking
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Decoration
- Level the tops of the cooled cakes if necessary.
- Place one layer on a serving plate and spread frosting on top.
- Place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake.
- Roll out the red fondant and cover the cake.
- Create a blue fondant spider and place it on top.
- Use black piping gel to design webs around the cake.
- Garnish with sprinkles or edible glitter as desired.
Notes
For best results, use ingredients at room temperature. If layers dome while baking, gently flatten while warm. For extra flavor, add a tablespoon of instant coffee granules to the batter.
