Preparation
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well blended.
- In a separate bowl, mix the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined; do not overmix.
- Knead the dough gently on a floured surface for about 1-2 minutes until it is smooth.
- Roll the dough out to about ½ inch thick, then use a donut cutter or two circular cutters to form the donuts and holes.
Cooking
- Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully place the donuts into the oil.
- Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
- Remove the donuts and let them drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Optionally, toss them in sugar or glaze once cooled slightly.
Notes
Store donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for best softness. Refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw and microwave for a few seconds.
