Method
Making the Dough
- Combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast in a large mixing bowl. Stir gently and let sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
- Add olive oil and salt, then approximately 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. If using garlic powder, add it now.
- Stir until smooth, then gradually add remaining flour half a cup at a time until dough pulls away from sides and forms a slightly sticky ball.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead by hand for about 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Grease a large bowl with olive oil, place the dough ball inside, cover, and let rise in a warm area for about 60 minutes until doubled in size.
Baking the Pizza
- Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C). Punch down risen dough to release air. Divide into two portions.
- Roll each portion into a 12-inch circle on parchment paper or greased baking sheet. Add sauce and toppings.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until crust is golden brown and cheese is bubbly.
Notes
For a chewier crust, replace all-purpose flour with bread flour. Ensure to preheat oven thoroughly for a crispy bottom. Let dough rest for 15 minutes before rolling if it shrinks back.
