  • 1 tsp Baking Powder Helps the cookies rise, giving them a tender texture.
  • 1/2 tsp Salt Enhances the flavors and balances the sweetness.
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter Make sure it’s softened at room temperature.
  • 1 cup Sugar Sweetens the cookies while allowing a lovely golden color when baked.
  • 2 pieces Eggs Adds moisture and richness, ensuring a lovely crumb.
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla Extract Infuses warm, aromatic notes that complement the orange zest perfectly.
  • 1 tbsp Orange Juice Provides a fresh burst of citrusy flavor that brightens the dough.
  • 1 tbsp Brandy Adds depth of flavor; a splash of rum can be a nice substitute.
  • 1 piece Zest of Orange Freshly grated to intensify the orange flavor.
  • 1 piece Egg Yolk Gives the cookies a beautiful, glossy finish.
  • 1 tbsp Milk Ensures a shiny golden color when mixed with the egg yolk.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until fluffy and pale.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract, orange juice, brandy, and orange zest until well combined.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  6. Divide the dough into small pieces and roll them into ropes about 6-8 inches long. Twist or braid them as desired.
  7. Place each shaped cookie on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. In a separate bowl, mix the egg yolk and milk. Brush this mixture over the tops of the cookies for a glossy finish.

  2. Let them cool on a wire rack.

Notes

To keep your Koulourakia fresh, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week, or freeze them for longer storage. Rotate baking sheets halfway through for even baking.
