  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure it is softened but not melted.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Replace 1/2 cup with cocoa powder for a chocolate version.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Can substitute with almond extract for a different flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Reduce to 1/8 teaspoon if using salted butter.
  • Optional: Sprinkles, sanding sugar, icing, chocolate chips for decoration Can be added for festive decorations.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt. Mix well.
  4. Gradually add the flour, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Form the dough into a disc and wrap it in plastic wrap. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
Baking
  1. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  2. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes. Place cookies on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Prick the cookies with a fork.
  4. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
  5. Let the cookies cool completely on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Decorate as desired with sprinkles, sanding sugar, or icing.

Notes

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. If you want to keep them longer, you can freeze the cookies for up to three months. Layer them with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
