  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast Make sure the yeast is fresh.
  • 1 teaspoon sugar To activate the yeast.
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water Warm, not hot.
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with whole wheat or bread flour.
  • 2 teaspoons salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil Adds moisture to the dough.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, combine yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  4. Stir until the mixture begins to come together into a dough.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Rising
  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
Baking
  1. Punch down the dough and roll it out to your desired thickness for pizza.
  2. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and cook the pizza with your chosen toppings until the crust is golden and cheese is bubbly.

Notes

For best results, experiment with different flours and add herbs for flavor. Store leftover dough in the refrigerator for up to three days, or freeze for up to three months.
