Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Optional

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Baking
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan.
  3. Let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  4. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  5. Allow to cool before slicing.

Notes

Store in a cool, dry place in a bread box or wrapped in a clean cloth. If not consumed within a few days, slice and freeze in a resealable bag for up to three months.
