Ingredients

For the batter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with whole wheat flour.
  • 1 cup water Sparkling water can be used for extra lightness.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder Essential for a lighter batter.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • to taste optional spices (like cumin, paprika, or garlic powder) Customize flavors.
For frying
  • as needed cooking oil (vegetable oil or other halal options) Ensure oil is at the right temperature.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and chosen spices. Stir well to mix them evenly.
  2. Gradually add water to the dry ingredients, continuing to mix until you have a smooth batter.
  3. The consistency should be thick enough to coat your snacks but thin enough to drizzle when needed.
Cooking
  1. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium heat.
  2. To check if it’s ready, drop a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and float to the top.
  3. Dip your chosen snack into the batter, making sure it’s well-coated.
  4. Gently place the battered snack into the hot oil, frying a few pieces at a time to avoid overcrowding the pan.
  5. Fry until golden brown and crispy, approximately 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. If desired, season with additional salt before serving.

Notes

For an extra crispy texture, try using sparkling water instead of regular water in the batter. Avoid microwaving leftovers to prevent sogginess.
