Preparation
- Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
- Gradually add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
Baking
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf.
- Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let it rise again for 30 minutes.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
Store French bread at room temperature in a bread box or wrapped in a clean kitchen towel. Avoid plastic bags. For longer storage, slice and place in an airtight container or freezer bag.
