Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries About 3 cups
  • 1 cup orange juice Freshly squeezed is best
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Or honey for a natural alternative
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest
  • 1 pinch salt Optional to enhance flavors

Method

Preparation
  1. Rinse the cranberries thoroughly in cold water and pick out any soft or bruised berries.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the orange juice and sugar over medium heat.
Cooking
  1. Stir the mixture occasionally until the sugar completely dissolves and the liquid begins to simmer.
  2. Add the cranberries to the saucepan and stir to coat them in the syrup.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil. You will hear the cranberries starting to pop open.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, until the sauce thickens as berries break down.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the fresh orange zest.
  6. Let the sauce cool completely at room temperature; it will continue to thicken as it cools.
  7. Once cooled, transfer the sauce to a bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve.
