Ingredients
  

Dough Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups warm water Should be around 110°F (43°C)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast May substitute with instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Boiling and Topping Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup baking soda Essential for achieving the pretzel flavor
  • 1 egg for egg wash
  • to taste coarse sea salt For topping
  • to taste butter For brushing before serving

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead until smooth.
  3. Let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
Cooking
  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large pot, bring a mixture of water and baking soda to a boil.
  3. Divide the dough into small pieces and shape them into bites.
  4. Boil each piece in the water solution for 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet.
  5. Brush each pretzel bite with egg wash and sprinkle with sea salt.
  6. Bake for about 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Brush with melted butter before serving.

Notes

Serve warm, ideally with mustard, cheese sauce, or ranch dressing for dipping. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days or freeze for up to a month.
