Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar; let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add melted butter, flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- Let the dough rise in a greased bowl, covered, for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Cooking
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil.
- Divide the dough into small pieces and roll each piece into a rope, then twist into a pretzel shape.
- Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on the baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
