  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast For activating the dough
  • 1 cup warm water Temperature should be warm, not hot
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar For activating yeast
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Melted
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour Or substitute up to half with whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt Flavoring the dough
Boiling Solution
  • 1/4 cup baking soda For boiling pretzels
Finishing Touch
  • 1 large egg Beaten for egg wash
  • Coarse sea salt For sprinkling on top

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar; let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add melted butter, flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl, covered, for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Cooking
  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil.
  3. Divide the dough into small pieces and roll each piece into a rope, then twist into a pretzel shape.
  4. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on the baking sheet.
  5. Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with dips like cheese sauce, mustard, or chocolate. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or freeze leftovers for up to 2 months.
