Preparation
- In a large bowl, beat softened butter with powdered sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Add egg and vanilla extract, and beat until well combined.
- In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the butter mixture, just until combined.
- Gently fold in sprinkles if using.
- Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Baking
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Scoop 1-tablespoon portions of dough, roll into balls, and optionally coat with more powdered sugar.
- Place balls 2 inches apart on baking sheets and bake for 9-11 minutes.
- Let cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Notes
To keep cookies fresh, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or freeze for up to three months. Chilling dough helps cookies hold their shape better.
