Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk Around 110°F (43°C)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • blue food coloring (optional) For color

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar until dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  3. Add the melted butter, egg, and the yeast mixture to the flour.
  4. Mix until a dough forms and knead for about 5-7 minutes on a floured surface until smooth.
  5. If using, knead the blue food coloring into the dough until evenly distributed.
Rising
  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  2. Punch down the dough and proceed with your desired recipe.

Notes

Don’t rush the yeast: Allow the yeast to fully activate until it’s frothy. Kneading is key: Proper kneading develops gluten, giving your dough structure.
